Accessibility Statement
everybody gets through the door
The short version
We want this shop usable by everyone — including people who browse with a screen reader, with a keyboard and no mouse, at four times the text size, with captions on, or with a nervous system that would rather nothing on the screen moved. We hold this website to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We are not all the way there, and the point of this page is to say plainly where we fall short, what we are doing about it, and how to get what you came for in the meantime.
If anything here stops you finding a product, reading a lab result, or placing an order, tell us and we will fix it or simply do it for you. Call (828) 222-4367, email info@skylandcannabis.com, or come to 2 Eagle Street in Asheville. There is nothing in this business you can only get to through this website.
Conformance status
Skyland Cannabis Co. considers this website partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. “Partially conformant” means most of the site meets that standard, and some parts — named below, each with something to do instead — do not.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are published by the World Wide Web Consortium, and Level AA is the bar a website like ours is read against under the Americans with Disabilities Act. We measure against version 2.2 rather than 2.1 because 2.2 is the current version and contains everything 2.1 asked for; the federal references some people know better — Section 508, EN 301 549 — point at the same Level AA.
What the site already does
These are commitments rather than aspirations. They are built into the page you are reading right now:
- It is written as real HTML. Headings in order, landmarks, navigation that announces itself as navigation, lists that are lists. A screen reader gets structure instead of one long wall of text.
- Everything is reachable with a keyboard. The animated way into the shop takes Enter, Space or Escape and is announced when it appears; dialogs say what they are; nothing traps you somewhere you cannot leave.
- Focus is visible. Where you are on the page is drawn, not implied.
- Images carry alt text, and artwork that carries no meaning — the drifting background, the confetti — is hidden from assistive technology rather than read out as noise.
- Things that change are announced. The product grid, the quantity in your cart, the result of the contact form and the result of a data-deletion request are all announced politely when they update, instead of changing in silence.
- Nothing moves if you have asked it not to. The site honours your system’s “reduce motion” setting everywhere it animates — the background, the transitions, the celebrations, the hidden extras.
- The music can always be stopped. The optional radio can start playing once you are inside the shop, so a mute button and a labelled volume slider sit in the header of every page, and your choice is remembered for the rest of your visit.
- Form fields are labelled, say what is required, and report what went wrong in words rather than in colour alone.
- The pages are text, not pictures of text, so they zoom and reflow with your browser instead of turning to mush.
- The compliance and legal notices are in the document itself, so they can be read with scripts turned off, saved, or handed to a reader.
Where we still fall short
Known limitations, what causes each one, and what to do instead. This list is honest rather than flattering; if you hit something that is not on it, that is a bug and we want to hear about it.
- The hidden arcade games. They are drawn on a canvas and played in real time with a keyboard or a thumb pad, and they cannot be played with a screen reader. They are fiction and entertainment only — nothing you need in order to shop, and nothing about our business, as our terms say. We do not currently have a way to make an arcade game work to the same standard as the rest of the site, and we would rather admit that than pretend otherwise.
- The music visualiser. Decorative animation with no information in it. It is off unless you turn it on, and it goes off the same way.
- Certificates of Analysis. Our lab results are PDFs produced by the third-party laboratories that run the tests, not by us, and some are scans a screen reader cannot read. Call or email and a person will read you any result on any batch, or send you the numbers as plain text.
- Card fields at checkout. The payment fields are served by our payment processor, and their markup is not ours to fix. If they give you trouble, we will take the whole order over the phone on (828) 222-4367.
- Product photography. Photographs come from our catalogue and their descriptions are short. Potency, contents and price are written out as text on every product, and a budtender will describe anything in as much detail as you like.
- The chat bot. It is experimental, it types its answers out as it goes, and we cannot promise its output is either accurate or accessible — which is also why nothing on this site ever requires you to use it. The phone reaches a human.
- There is no “skip to content” link yet. Landmarks let a screen reader jump past the header today; a proper skip link is on our list to add.
- The site needs JavaScript to shop. The catalogue, the cart and checkout are assembled in your browser. The legal, compliance and contact information is in the page either way — and the phone works with no browser at all.
- Third-party media. A couple of small extras embed video we neither host nor caption.
Anything you cannot use here, we will do for you
This is the part that matters most, so it gets its own heading. Everything this website does, a person at the shop can do with you instead — describe the menu, read you a lab result, check what is in stock, take an order, arrange pickup, handle a return, or take a complaint. Call (828) 222-4367 during shop hours, email info@skylandcannabis.com, or come to 2 Eagle Street, Downtown Asheville. There is no surcharge, no separate process, and nothing you have to explain or prove to anybody to be helped this way.
What we tested, and how
This statement rests on a self-evaluation carried out by Skyland Cannabis Co.: a review of the markup and stylesheets behind every public page, keyboard-only walkthroughs of the shop, the product pages, the contact form and checkout, and checks of the reduced-motion, zoom and audio behaviour described above. It has not yet been audited by an independent third party. When it is, this page will say so, and will say what the audit found.
Technical specifications. This site relies on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WAI-ARIA, SVG and the HTML canvas element — and on those being supported by your browser and by whatever assistive technology you use with it.
Compatibility. The site is built for current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile, used with the assistive technology built into or commonly paired with them: VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA, JAWS, magnification and system text scaling. Older browsers may work but are not tested. We cannot test every combination that exists, so if yours is the one that breaks, tell us what it is — that is genuinely useful information and we will act on it.
Tell us — we would rather hear it
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of this website. It helps to know what page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what got in the way — and, if you know it, the browser and assistive technology you were using.
- Email — info@skylandcannabis.com (put “Accessibility” in the subject and it goes to the top of the pile)
- Phone — (828) 222-4367, during shop hours, answered by a person
- The form — our contact page, which reaches the same inbox
- Post — Skyland Cannabis Co., 2 Eagle Street, Asheville, NC 28801
We aim to reply within five business days, and to tell you either that it is fixed or what we are doing about it and roughly when. If a fix is going to take a while, we will offer you a way to get the same thing done in the meantime rather than leave you waiting on it.
If we do not put it right
If you have contacted us and are not satisfied with the answer, ask for the owner — this is a small business, and the person who can decide is reachable on the same number.
You may also contact the U.S. Department of Justice ADA Information Line on (800) 514-0301 (TTY (833) 610-1264) or at ada.gov. We would much rather fix the problem ourselves, and quickly, than have you need that number — but it is your right, and it belongs on this page.
About this statement
This statement applies to skylandcannabis.com and was prepared on 17 August 2026, following the structure the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative recommends for accessibility statements. It was last reviewed on 17 August 2026.
We review it at least once a year, and again whenever we make a material change to the site, so that what it claims and what the site does stay the same thing. Accessibility here is ongoing work, not a box that has been ticked.
